Celebrities... Who Are Youth?

Celebrities and Their Influence

The anonymous author of “Celebrities and Their Influence” lists the harmful influence of celebrity decisions on youth. In this article, the author clearly portrays his/her stance on celebrity influence. “Celebrities and Their Influence” states “Celebrities influence fans to be destructively thin, put harmful substances in their bodies, and many parents are concerned with the overall content these celebrities are putting on television, in movies, and over the internet.” The author suggests that the decisions of “pop culture idols” have caused youth to be unhappy with their personal image. He/she states “... more young adults are feeling ‘less confident, more angry, and more dissatisfied’ with their looks.” This shows how adults are worried about the effect celebrities are having on young adults. Polls show that adults have noticed children using “... derogatory language, singing suggestive song lyrics, and even flirting with each other.” The author clearly reveals his opinion on celebrities. “They have too much of an influence on young girls.”
This article is biased. The author argues that celebrities are the reason for lack of confidence and bad behavior in youth today. What the author fails to address is that, as we evolve into different styles, attitudes, and beliefs, music and celebrities will evolve also. Although celebrities influence teens’ attitude about life and themselves, insecurities, foul language and bad attitude come from many other things. These include friends, people on the street, movies, books, magazines and adults. The behavior of youth today shouldn’t be blamed on “pop idols” when home lives, school and everyday people cause these things. The article presents a quote from a first grade teacher explaining the behavior of her students. The end of the quote states that her students were “..flirting with each other.” I feel that the adults included in the making of this article are over reacting immensely. When did flirting become so terrible? As if these adults don’t remember flirting when they were in school. If adults are so worried about the way their teens are acting, they should pay more attention to their children’s daily life. Celebrities do have an effect on youth. Celebrities are not the whole reason for insecurities and bad behavior. Teens will always have insecurities and celebrities will always try to be the best.

  13. Gentri, I really like how you were giving eye contact throughout your entire speech. I also really liked how rehearsed you were. I could tell that you really practiced. I could also see how important the topic was to you. I liked your perspective on the topic, and it made me see the topic in a different way.

  14. I liked how you opened me up to a different way of thinking about the subject like the community not just the influences.

  15. I agree with you, I also think that it is not true. Celebrities have and influence, but it is not the main reason like stated in the article. The community has a big influence on teenagers, and they don't always notice. Your PLN presentation gave me a brand new perspective. It was great!

  16. I liked the perspective you talked from the adults point of view. You stayed focused and did not drift away from the topics you chose.

  17. I like how you found other articles to support what you think.

  18. You did really well with not stopping and trying to think of what you were going to say next.

  19. I loved how you got more information from other articles. It brought me some insight from other sources.

  20. Why do you think that teens are so concerned about what their friends think?

  21. So I really like your statement and thoughts and how you backed yourself up. You didn't just say "I disagree." you gave reasons why and that was really cool. I also liked how you showed a bunch of different stories from teenagers. Your visual examples were very well done. your presentation overall was really good as well. Your eye contact, steadiness of your voice and not fidgeting was awesome. The point you made throughout the entire presentation was really good. You kind of changed my thinking on this topic. I disagree and agree with you. I liked how now you're making me think about my own response to this topic. You did a really good job!

  22. I agree with you, celebrities do have some influence on teenagers. Celebrities are most definitely not the main reason why teenagers are insecure. Usually, people are insecure because of social status.

  23. I have to say I agree with you. However what about people who are at a lower position on on the economic ladder, and have no one to look up to (Parents, brothers, sisters, ect.), do you think that those children will tend to follow their celebrity role models more?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think that you had a good argument and your gave research to back up your thoughts but I think that the article was telling the truth that Pop stars have to much influence on younger kids, which that will make them feel out of place.

  25. I liked how you did not say like or um a bunch. Also you were very confident in your presentation. When you were standing up their you were not afraid to talk to the class and seemed very natural.

  26. i agree with you that its not celebrities influencing teens. I think that people should get more involved.

  27. I really liked how you used an article written by a teen, and how you related to yourself because you are a teen. And also you points of view on the topic because it was very different from mine. I could tell that you had practiced and rehearsed this project.

I also do agree with you because i think that kids have to find there own way in life and there parents can't stop things from influencing teens, because almost everything in the world is influential. Even celebrities influence teens but everything bad that kids do doesn't come from celebrities. Some of the things that celebrities are bad but some of it is also a good thing and kids can learn from it.

  28. In what ways do you think pop culture effects people? In how they talk, act etc. Do you think that pop culture effects you?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I liked how you spoke clearly and did a great job keeping the presentation engaging.

  30. I liked how you challenged the text and how you went out to see what the insecurities were to support your answer. You had a very nice flow and you didn't have to stop and think about what you were going to say next, it sounded like you practiced really well.

I agree with your belief but I think it has to do more with the parents blocking out inappropriate stuff not just the community. I like your way of thinking and I can defiantly see a different solution to this problem .

  31. I like the way you speak clearly and keep a good flow. You use quotes and other recourses to back up the message your trying to get across. It's interesting that you believe pop culture isn't the main cause of insecurity. I think that friends and family are a main part of this problem. I also liked the adult perspective you introduce to the subject. If this was written by an adult it would definitely seem bias.

  32. I liked how you stayed focused on the audience. I also liked the how firm in your opinion and respectfully disagreed. I thing that might have more of an influence than you might thing but I agree that social status inside of school is the largest factor. That's one of the reasons that I believe that home schooled kids are better off. They still have friends but they aren't exposed to the imminence diversity of social status. This, I believe, helps homeschoolers to feel overall better about themselves.

  33. I do believe you made a good argument, but I personally believe the article was correct, at least for girls, because I have even seen this in my sister who is fairly underweight for her age. She still believes that she needs to lose weight despite this revelation because of so many of these extremely skinny women on TV that are considered beautiful just because of their waist size.

  34. I like how you had like a slide show on other articles. I also liked how you weren't nervous and you voiced you opinion. I like how you open and said "Hi everyone."

Do you think that just girls have insecurities? Also I agree with you that its not all celebrities fault that people have insecurities because like you said school and family and social network can make a lot of teens insecure.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I like how you added a different article and how the original article, "Celebrities and Their Influences," and show a different view and how the original article is mostly incorrect. I liked how you said that the celebrities and media can also have an effect on insecurities but not entirely because there's still the people who are around in your community.

  36. I really liked how you made me see the topic in a new light. I totally agree with you that many insecurities come from school life and popularity. I don't agree; however, with you saying that celebrities aren't the main cause for insecurities. I think that celebrities make people want to feel popular, and when they can't at school that makes them sad. I also think that when they see how successful celebrities are they wonder what they're doing at school, and that would make them even sadder at school making it harder to socialize. I think that celebrities have a HUGE role in teen insecurities. Do you think that celebrities can influence adults? What I mean by this is do you think that celebrities can make adults feel insecure about how they're raising their children, etc.?

  37. I liked how you went outside the text and used other sources to find out more. I also liked how you weren't afraid to express your belief's. I think you did a great job!

I agree with what you said because I think people just blame celebrities rather than thinking about the other issues in this world. I think that even I wouldn't of thought of the other circumstances if I hadn't heard your blog. This really changed my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I agree with you that the main thing is insecurities. You gave me a new perspective of the topic by how it seemed so important to you.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I agree with what you said about the community around the teenager causing the teenagers insecurities. Could their be other sources of the problem besides celebrities and the community? Could having a popular item like clothes, technology, etc. be a effect to insecurity.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I also liked how you were able to incorporate other articles into the main article to support your ideals.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree with you, celebrities do have some influence on teens but overall it is not the biggest influence

  42. Gentri,
You seemed very confident in your own thoughts and evidence. You weren't afraid to argue with the text. I also really enjoyed you presentation. You came extremely prepared and had evidence to back up all of your thoughts. I admire the fact that you took your thoughts further than the text by looking at different articles that helped back up your opinions. Your presentation was very intriguing and had me involved the entire time!

One thing that I think you could work on next time is try not looking at the screen as often. But honestly, that's the only thing that I noticed that you could really work on.

    Great job Gentri!!
